Multipole™  Press Release - Wednesday, 5 May 2004

A new generation of aesthetically pleasing multi-function street poles is being installed in Canberra Section 84, adjacent to the CBD. The new pole won the Canberra contract against stiff competition from several other forms of multi-function street poles including the pole used in the Sydney CBD.

The product called Multipole™ is made by a new Sydney based company called Fyntrim Pty Ltd. Fyntrim was established for the purposes of arranging the manufacture and marketing of Multipole™ and a new range of attractive anodised aluminium street furniture including some exciting new low maintenance bus shelters.

Multifunction poles are utilised in modern cities to clean up the streetscape by facilitating the mounting of street lighting, street signs, traffic signals and banners etc all on an attractive single pole. Thus fewer poles are required and footpaths have fewer obstructions.

Some years ago Fyntrim Product Development Manager, Douglas Rawson-Harris was involved in the development of the multi-function street pole that ultimately became the modern street pole installed in Sydney CBD at the time of the 2000 Olympics and is still used in Sydney today.

The ideas behind Multipole™ is an amalgam of concepts developed by Douglas in over 30 years of experience in the design, manufacture and maintenance of yacht spars, marine fittings, flagpoles, banner poles and light poles. Worldwide Patents have been applied for and Australian Designs have been registered to protect the Multipole™ intellectual property.

Multipole™ has several unique features. Items such as signs, video surveillance cameras and banners can readily be fitted at any time to the external tracks on Multipole™ via an ingenious clamping system. The attractive fluted cladding at the base of the pole is adjustable in height from the pavement and easily removable, via a single patented security screw, for convenient access to switchgear. A ventilated top cap minimises internal humidity and consequent corrosion of wiring and switchgear. Light arms are attached by a robust spigot system that includes a method of fine-tuning the angle of the arm.

Multipole™ is made from a structural grade of corrosion resistant marine aluminium without the need for a central steel core. It is truly a long life pole without the disadvantages of steel. Its anodised finish will ensure that poles stay bright and fresh looking for many decades in the same way that anodised yacht masts do.

The new Fyntrim street furniture has similar advantages and shares a similar appearance, clearly belonging to the same family of products as Multipole™.
